Two moments. One photo.
Split Shot lets you expose two different parts of the frame separately, bringing them together in a single instant photo. You can use it to create half-and-half portraits, mirrored scenes, unexpected combinations, or collage-like compositions.
The trick is simple: the Split Shot accessory blocks one part of the lens while you take your first shot, then the other part while you take your second.
How to create a Split Shot
What you’ll need
Your camera, the Split Shot accessory and a little idea of what you want each half of the photo to do.
Set up your camera
Set the camera to Split Shot mode (look for the Split Shot icon), then attach the Split Shot accessory to the lens.
Choose your first half
Rotate the Split Shot accessory so it blocks one half of the lens. You can split your image vertically or horizontally, depending on the composition you want to create. Take Shot 1. Only the uncovered part of the frame will be exposed.
Line up the second half
Rotate the Split Shot accessory so it blocks the opposite half of the lens. Before taking your next shot, think about where the two images will meet. Strong lines like door frames, windows, walls or horizons can help make the split feel clean and intentional. Or don’t make it clean at all. Slightly mismatched halves can make things much more interesting.
Take your second shot
Compose your second scene and take Shot 2. Try combining subjects that wouldn’t normally share the same frame: a portrait and a texture, sky and architecture, two different faces, or the same person twice.
Let it develop
After the second exposure, the photo will eject. Shield it from light and leave it face-down while it develops. Then see what your two halves made together.
A few things to try
Once you’ve got the basic technique, experiment with where you place the Split Shot accessory, and what you put on either side. Try matching shapes across two different locations, creating an impossible portrait, pairing something huge with something tiny, or photographing the same scene at two different moments.
You don’t need the halves to match perfectly. Sometimes the little mistakes in the middle are the best part.
